Introduction (top)
The books of Kings do not give a complete
and detailed history of all Judah and Israel. They give only passing reference
to powerful kings while giving great emphasis to Elijah and Elisha. Almost
every king is introduced by a special formula: the year of ascension to
the throne by reference to the year of the reign of the king of the other
kingdom; in the case of the kings of the Judah, the age at ascension, and
the name of the king's mother are given; the length of reign; and, most
important, the writer evaluates the reign of each king. The theme of these
books is that God blesses the king and the nation when they keep the covenant.
His judgment falls with inevitable certainty upon those who disobey his
law.
